Significant Writing Project

Outcome- Demonstrate the ability to approach writing as a recursive process that requires substantial revision of drafts for content, organization, and clarity (global revision), as well as editing and proofreading (local revision).

This learning outcome is focused on revising in ways that strengthen the ideas and structure of a project between first and final drafts, and in final editing/proofreading at the end of a project.

Revisit your early revision work this term and consider any changes to your revision process/understanding since the beginning of the term. Open both your first and final drafts to help you make a side-by-side comparison that reveals substantive changes. Take notes on paper as you make a comparison.

Below is the reflection of my writing journey through this course

When I started writing the very first paper, I was unsure of how my personal experience could be compared to real life fundamental/structural problems. Going into college English and writing papers was intimidating at first, unsure of my writing capability. The first drafts of my writing had some transitioning issues, word choice, struggles to not be redundant, etc. As I went through the semester I learned how to incorporate outside ideas to my own experience and overall made me open my perspective to how one overarching topic can be applied to multiple different avenues. It was very rewarding to look at all the work I have completed by the end of the semester. My fundamental struggles were improved significantly, and my ideas flowed more fluently than I thought they would. What I think helped with my learning and flow was attempting these papers into small parts. Not just having a requirement of one page or a certain amount done. It was paragraph by paragraph. Ensuring that quality thought was put into each paragraph, and allowing for reflection before moving to a different topic. Another thing that was different that made me a more efficient writer was going out of my comfort zone and not writing the introduction/conclusion paragraphs till the end. It was much easier summarizing what the whole paper was about instead of creating an introduction and formulating the paper to that introduction. Going back to my fundamentals in my writing, when we did peer review there were many more comments in the beginning and revisions, as we moved further along, less and less comments about fundamentals were made, and more reflective comments emerged. Now looking at my final draft, compared to my first draft I have come a long way in my writing journey, and will continue to improve as my years at UNE continue.
